Oral Health for Individuals with Vegetarian Diet

Oral Health for Individuals with Vegetarian DietPreventive dentistry seeks to treat minor problems before they become more serious problems.
For example, your diet plays a major role in your oral health. A vegetarian diet can help you cut down on fat and cholesterol and lead an overall healthier life. However, if you aren’t getting all the nutrients you need, you could be doing more damage than good. Nutritional deficiencies can often affect  your oral health.

Diets that skimp on foods of animal origin can be lacking in certain nutrients, including calcium, vitamins D and B12, riboflavin and complete proteins. However, a diet properly balanced with legumes, grains, vegetables and fruits can provide all the nutrients you need for oral health.

If you are missing any key nutrients, though, particularly over a prolonged period, you may be at an increased risk for periodontal, or gum, disease. Without adequate vitamin D, teeth may be more susceptible to tooth decay. Vitamin D is produced naturally in the body after sun exposure, but if you avoid eating milk or fish, you may be deficient. Fortified soy milk or orange juice can increase your intake of this critical vitamin.

A special diet, such as those associated with vegetarianism, may put you at risk of developing periodontal, or gum, disease or tooth decay if you do not ensure adequate nutrient intake. Before eliminating any food group from your diet, talk to your doctor or nutritionist, and let our dentist know about any nutritional changes you have made. Our Los Angeles cosmetic dentist can help you determine if you are receiving the appropriate amount of nutrients for your dental health.
